Tens of thousands of carp have been fished out of the Darling River in an effort to help native fish stocks recover after devastating fish kills last month.

Commercial fishing crews began removing the invasive species from the section of river near the Menindee township on Monday.

In the last three days, fishers have managed to remove more than 50,000 carp.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fisheries Murray-Darling program lead Cameron Lay said the removal of carp would hopefully boost the chances of survival for native fish.

"We felt if we could really focus on that area and remove as many carp as possible, that would take some of the stress of the remnant native fish," he said.

"Both through reducing competition for food and habitat.

"[Carp] themselves will just consume oxygen by being in the water so the less carp that were in there … the better it would be for the natives."

The removal of carp is the latest step in the clean-up and recovery operation following massive fish kills at Menindee six weeks ago.

From March 17 to 19, locals in the far-west town were left stunned and frustrated when as many as 20 million native fish died in the Darling River from a lack of oxygen.

The ecological catastrophe triggered a multi-agency response involving NSW Police, WaterNSW, Essential Water, the Central Darling Shire and the DPI.

At the time the NSW Labor Government, which had just come to power, vowed to launch an inquiry into the disaster — to establish how it happened, water management practices and how to prevent fish kills from occurring again.

Water testing was undertaken by the Environmental Protection Authority in the weeks after the fish kills to determine if any pollutants had a part to play.

Mr Lay said most of the carp being removed were juvenile fish, which was good news for the waterway.

"They [are predominantly] very small individuals … obviously carp that have really benefited from the wet conditions of the last couple of years," he said.

"They would have had the potential to grow to be bigger and have a bigger impact on the environment.

"We hope this will give those native [fish] in that reach the best chance of survival, in what has been a really challenging summer."

Mr Lay said the fishing operation would continue until the end of the week, when the department would consider its next steps and evaluate the progress made.
